Folio.md ships as one program. There is no plugin store to browse, no compatibility matrix to maintain, and no set of add-ons to re-install on your next machine. Everything below is in the download.

Writing

The editor itself, and the shortcuts that keep your hands on the keyboard.

  • Edit tables like a spreadsheet

    Drag rows and columns to reorder them, add or remove them from the corner, and sort or align with a right-click. The result is still plain Markdown.

  • Drop it in, or paste it

    Drop an image into the document, or paste a screenshot from the clipboard. The file is saved next to the document and the link is inserted for you.

  • Live preview

    See the rendered page as you type. Long documents stay fast.

  • Syntax highlighting for code

    Code blocks are colored according to their language, just like in a code editor.

  • Formatting shortcuts

    Bold, italic, strikethrough, highlight, code, quotes, lists and headings toggle with a keystroke; links, images and code blocks are inserted where the cursor is. Every shortcut can be changed.

  • Markdown beautify

    Tidy up blank lines, list markers, heading spacing and table alignment in one keystroke. Tables line up even when they mix Japanese, Chinese or Korean with Latin text. Code blocks are left as they are.

  • Paste from the browser as Markdown

    Copy a page or a fragment from your browser and it arrives as Markdown, not as a wall of HTML.

  • Find and replace

    Search within a document, with regular expressions and case matching when you need them, and replace what you find.

Rendering

What the preview can draw, beyond the basics.

  • Mermaid diagrams

    Write a flowchart, sequence diagram or Gantt chart as text and see it drawn in the preview.

  • LaTeX math

    Write formulas in LaTeX and see them rendered crisply in the preview and in your exports.

  • Extended Markdown syntax

    Footnotes, definition lists, task lists, tables, subscript and superscript, highlighted text, emoji, automatic links and front matter.

  • Checkboxes inside table cells

    Checkboxes work inside table cells too, and you can tick them in the preview.

  • Link previews, YouTube cards and images

    Links become preview cards, YouTube links become video cards, and GIFs and SVGs display as expected. Fetching from the web can be turned off entirely.

  • Size and place images in the preview

    Drag an image in the preview to set its size and position. The document itself keeps a plain Markdown link, so it still opens anywhere.

Finding your way around

Search, structure, and the small things that stop long documents from becoming a maze.

  • Search and replace across folders

    Search a whole folder tree at once, with regular expressions when you need them, and replace across every file in one go.

  • Wikilinks and backlinks

    Connect notes with wikilinks and see which documents link back to the one you are reading.

  • Hashtag index

    Browse the hashtags used across your folders in one panel and jump to any document that uses them.

  • Outline panel

    Every heading in one indented list, so a long article stays one click deep.

  • Two-way scroll sync

    The editor and the preview scroll together, and stay aligned even in documents with large images or diagrams.

Files, tabs and sync

Your existing folders are the workspace. Nothing is imported.

  • Tabs and workspaces

    Open as many documents as you like, drag tabs to reorder them, and save a set of open files as a workspace to restore later.

  • File explorer

    Browse your folders with sorting, favorites and hidden-file handling, and hide the folders you do not want to see.

  • External change detection

    If another program changes a file you have open, Folio.md tells you and lets you decide what to do.

  • Two-way cloud sync

    Sync your folders with Google Drive or OneDrive using your own account, at no extra charge. Edits made on another machine are never silently overwritten: conflicting changes ask you which to keep, and a bulk deletion pauses for confirmation. Encrypted documents stay encrypted in the cloud.

  • Fits into File Explorer

    Open .md files with a double-click, add ‘Open with Folio.md’ to the folder menu, and create new Markdown files from the New menu. Each is a separate switch, and none of them needs administrator rights.

  • No import, no migration

    Open the .md files already on your disk and save them back in place. Nothing has to be imported first, and your documents stay plain Markdown.

Privacy and encryption

For the notes you would rather not put in a cloud you do not control.

  • Per-file encryption

    Password-protect individual files with AES-256-GCM encryption. You also get a key file that can open the document if you forget the password; keep it somewhere safe, away from the document. Encrypted files open in Folio.md; decrypt them before using another editor.

  • Auto-lock

    An open encrypted file locks again after the configured period of inactivity.

  • You decide what leaves the machine

    Link previews and images from the web can be turned off in one setting, and exports respect it too. Cloud sync and AI stay off until you turn them on, and API tokens are stored encrypted and never included when you export your settings.

Automation and AI

Reach your other tools without leaving the editor.

  • Command terminal

    One shortcut opens a terminal window where built-in commands and your own tools are called by name.

  • Run a command on your selection

    Send the selected text through any program on your PC, such as a formatter or a script of your own, and put the result back in the document.

  • Call web APIs

    Send the document or a selection to an HTTP API and choose where the response goes. Access tokens are stored encrypted.

  • Built-in MCP client

    Connect to MCP servers and call their tools from inside the editor.

  • AI chat that reads your document

    Ask for a summary or a rewrite of the document you have open. Works with cloud AI services or a model running on your own machine. You connect with an API key from the provider, which is separate from a ChatGPT or Claude chat subscription, and the provider's fees are your own.

  • External programs, gestures and shortcuts

    Launch your own tools from a shortcut, a mouse gesture or the command terminal.

Sharing and export

Hand over a file, not a link.

  • HTML with embedded styles

    Export a single HTML file with styles, formulas and diagrams built in. Images stored on your disk are linked, not embedded; choose PDF when the file has to carry them.

  • PDF export

    Export with a print-friendly light background, regardless of the editor theme. Paper size and margins are not set in the app; use the print dialog when you need to adjust them.

  • Print

    Send the rendered document straight to your printer.

Making it yours

How much of the interface bends to your habits.

  • Custom color themes

    Twenty-five presets, or build your own. The colors of the whole interface can be changed, light and dark are set separately, and changes apply immediately.

  • Reassign the shortcuts

    Editing, encryption, search, the command terminal and your external tools all share one shortcut table, and nearly every entry can be changed.

  • Eight interface languages

    English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

  • Fonts and spacing
