Before you start syncing
Google Drive and OneDrive are supported. For OneDrive this means a personal Microsoft account. Sync covers everything below the folder, images as well as documents.
Sync applies changes and deletions in both directions. That is a different job from a backup, which keeps earlier states, so keep the copies you need somewhere else.
Sync runs for one folder at a time: the one matching the folder you currently have open. Hiding the cloud entry in the activity bar also stops sync from starting.
Create a new synced folder
- Press Ctrl+Shift+O and open the local folder you want to sync.
- Open the sync panel from the cloud icon on the left.
- From +, choose Sync this folder to Google Drive or Sync this folder to OneDrive.
- Sign in and allow Folio.md access.
- Choose the parent folder on the service and a name for the new folder, then press Create Here.
- Check the notice that sync has started, and the state shown in the panel.
Google Drive signs in through your system browser. OneDrive signs in inside the app, and can switch to browser authentication where that is needed.
Connect to an existing folder from another PC
Select Connect to existing cloud folder (the folder link icon at the top of the sync panel). Choose the service and sign in, then select the cloud folder and the local folder where its files will be stored. If the local folder is empty, the first sync downloads the cloud folder’s contents.
Google Drive access is limited to the files Folio.md created and works with, so a folder made another way may not appear in the list. In that case, use the steps for creating a new synced folder.
One local folder cannot be synced to several services, and one synced folder cannot sit inside another.
Check the state of sync
Local changes are picked up about five seconds after they are detected, and a periodic check runs every 30 seconds. To switch to another synced folder, double-click it in the panel.
| State | What to do |
|---|---|
| Syncing | Wait for it to finish |
| Offline | Check the network, and that the local folder or external drive is connected |
| Sign-in needed | Double-click the folder and authenticate again |
| Error | Read the message. OneDrive does not upload files larger than 250 MB |
| Paused | You chose No in the bulk-deletion confirmation. Deletions are held back, but uploads and downloads continue |
.tmp files, and files whose names cannot be created locally, are left out of sync.
Decide on conflicts and deletions
When the same file has been edited on both sides, the conflict dialog asks which to keep.
| Choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Keep Local | Overwrites the cloud copy with what you have locally |
| Keep Cloud | Overwrites your local copy with what is in the cloud |
| Keep Both | Keeps the local version under a name with _conflict_<timestamp>, and takes the cloud version |
If you are not yet sure which to keep, Keep Both lets you compare them. A confirmation appears when a large number of deletions is detected. The threshold for that warning is adjustable under Settings → Backup.
Stop syncing
Right-click the folder in the panel and choose Remove Sync. Only the sync setting is removed; the files stay in place both locally and in the cloud.
To sign out of a service, use Settings → Backup → Cloud Storage. Encrypted documents stay encrypted while syncing, but do not keep the key file used to decrypt them in the same synced folder.
